A press release for the ad campaign states that Starbucks is a "values-led company", explaining that "taking a customer's name, writing it on a cup and calling it out is a symbol of our warm welcome. (The ad) celebrates this signature act and the significance it can have for some transgender and gender diverse people as they use their new name in public."
The company is celebrating the Channel 4 Diversity Award the ad won in 2019 with a new hashtag campaign, #whatsyourname. The ad campain also features "Moving Portraits," a collection of videos featuring transgender people describing how they came up with their new names.
Starbucks says that they hope the campaign will "address the transgender community's lack of representation in UK advertising."
